Hi All. My Husband And I Are Looking To Purchase A Home That We Both Absolutely Love But There Are 2 (Potentially Costly?) Problems. (1) There Is No Central Air, And The Ducts (?) Won'T Allow For It Because It Has Baseboard Heating (???) And (2) The Windows Are All Original To The House, Meaning Heating And Cooling Costs Literally Go Out The Window....:(
My Question Is How Much (Estimate) Would Full Central Air And New (Double Paned) Windows Be For A House That Is 3500 Sq. Ft. And Approximately 40 Windows? We Would Need To Factor In This Cost In Our Bid....A Ballpark Is Fine!!! Thanks In Advance!!! 🙂
First of all I am a general Contractor who has our own carpenters, we sub out non-Carpentry work.
I have never seen a window other than a storm window for $70. I don't know everything - but here is what I would estimate.
1st story windows = a good replacement window in a double hung unit (raise up and down) $300-$450 ea. 36" x 54" or less. 1st story picture window (solid large glass in center - 2 flank units -one on each side $ 800-$1200. 6' x 54" or less.
Replacement windows can be sized so minimal interior work is required, but these windows leave in the old frame.
We have done both systems. Usually we install Pella,Marvin or Andersen Replacement windows and we pull the entire old unit out frame and all. Set new windows, New trim & extension jambs, sometimes we need to bend and fit new aluminum around exterior fillers and caulk.
This type system allow $400 - $600 per window.
$1200 - $1500 for large picture window. Bay and Bow windows priced according to size.

Central air will require ductwork (I'm guessing in ceiling) is your house on a slab? If you have adequate room in crawl or basement you might want to convert whole new system to heat pump.

I didn't see where you mentioned if this is 2 story house or not. This will add to prices as you probably will need a ductwork chase somewhere from 1st level to 2nd level for ductwork, trunklines.

There is absolutely no danger in this. There are no emissions from a window A/C unit. The only thing it does is extract heat from the air that gets blown into the room, and blows it out of the room (in this case into your garage). The only other thing it does is create condensation (water) which also dumps out of the unit to the outside (the garage). No worries.
As for that 2x2 hole in the opposite wall, cover it up. The cooled air that you just paid money to cool, is gonna escape through that hole. If you leave that open, you may as well just leave the windows open as well.

Someone Told Me A Solution To This Would Be To Install High Velocity Air Conditioning As It Does Not Require Massive Installation Of Duct Work. the high velocity central ac systems that use small diameter,less intrusive ductwork work well as far as i've seen....they can be more expensive because you have to buy the specific ductwork required from the same place you buy the indoor unit [ air handler]...usually you can use any major brand outdoor unit...the brand i've seen is called "unico",,work fine......as far as the radiater heat,it isnt the radiaters that are more eff or less eff,,but the boiler itself....is it gas fired [ natural or propane /lp ] ??...if so,if its less than 20 years old its probably around 80% eff,meaning only 20% of the heat is vented to the outside...if its 25-35 years old,probably around 70% eff,,,older than that,probably 60% eff.....for the most part,gas boilers top out around 80-83% eff,,,any more eff than that and you cant vent them conventionally,,in which case the boiler and venting can cost more,,only makes sense if conventional venting [ chimney or vertical b-vent through house ] has a problem that would be cost prohibitive to repair.....most oil fired boilers are in the 70%-80% eff range as far as i know,but i dont work on oil fired furnaces/boilers......and you can use a programmable tstat with the boiler....fyi,radiater heat is the best heat...the reason most new homes dont have it is because they are running all the ductwork for the central ac anyway,,cheaper to connect a hot air furnace to the ducts than to run a lot of water pipes and radiaters with a boiler as well as having a seperate central ac system with its own ductwork,,also not everyone likes the look of radiaters,including the newer "tube in fin" baseboard type............dan
