You can ask any business to provide evidence of general liability contractor insurance. Any business that is not going to provide proof of basic liability (GL) insurance ought to be avoided. A minimum standard for GL insurance is $1 million for domestic work and $2 million for light business.
There are other techniques for researching air conditioning, heating and ventilation companies such as: contact your local Better Business Bereau (BBB), perform online searches and reviews and ask the business in question for references. However, all these approaches disappoint extensive transparency. The BBB in fact works for the companies it represents as they are just rated if the business in concern pays them a repeating fee. Online review sites seldom display all of the evaluations received, and post evaluations from sources that are not always reputable. This supplies a platform for companies to publish their own reviews and individuals to hastily publish evaluations without the company in question's ability to professionally solve the issue. Moreover, no company would provide an unfavorable reference; just those that are exceptionally favorable. None of these are perfect characteristics for customers seeking entirely objective reviews and referrals. It is advised to use these approaches as an informed consumer and think about the info source for what it deserves.
Among the finest methods to find a brand-new a/c, heating and ventilation contractor is through the "word-of-mouth" technique. If the business suggested was budget-friendly, expert and reputable for a good friend or family member, there is a great chance that company will do the exact same for you. Great companies use the word-of-mouth method to continually supply a new client stream by keeping their clients delighted.
Other traditional methods for discovering a new air conditioning, heating and ventilation contractor consist of carrying out online searches, telephone directory directory sites or online directory sites and other ad mediums. Keep in mind that of these approaches are purchased and paid for by the companies in concern. None of these techniques ought to function as a testimonial and should be used only as finding sources.
3rd party suppliers such as Angie's list, Find Local and other online companies are the newest platforms for sourcing and rating a/c, heating and ventilating companies. Although these business do provide a service with some benefit, they are, in fact, adding expense to the consumer. Angie's List, along with some other online organisation directory sites, charge the consumer directly for their rankings and business' contact information. Other third-party sites provide consumers with air conditioning, heating and ventilation companies and add the expense of being a middle-man to the company formula. Keep in mind that none of these are "free" which customers need to comprehend the expense and worth of using entities like these.
Multiple quotes are suggest when employing a cooling and heating professional. There are no market standards for rates HEATING AND COOLING related product or service. Comparable tasks can differ countless dollars from one business to the next. A minimum of three price quotes is advised prior to the repair or replacement of any significant cooling and or heater element and prior to the design and setup of brand-new systems.
A second opinion can be of worth if the repair work or replacement is expensive. Not all professionals or business are equal or trusted. Repairing cooling and heater is incredibly intricate. It is not unusual for a repair service technician to be not able to separate the issue or for an agent to suggest an unnecessary purchases. Getting in touch with a contending air conditioning and heating business can save time and money and regret.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Portable Air Conditioner Vs. Window Air Conditioner?
Does Anyone Know Which One Is The Best Kind Of Air Conditioner To Go With? Is There A Certain Brand And/Or Model You Highly Recommend?
I'M Moving Into A Two Bedroom Apartment And I'M Looking For Something Energy Efficient.
Generally it's a trade off between cost, efficiency, and convenience. If you look at square foot cooling ratings, it'll reflect that. If you compare two 10,000 BTU units (one being a window unit, one being a wheeled united), you will find that although they may be rated the same, the wheeled unit will perform similar to a 6000-7000 unit.
At Costco, a Sharp 10,000 BTU portable unit is rated for 425 square feet, while a windowed 12,000 BTU unit is rated at 745 square feet. Notice that although it only has a 2,000 BTU gain, it offers much more "actual" cooling.
There are many variables on why this is. One is that extra energy is required to "pump" the hot air outside, while that isn't necessary on a window unit since the same motor that spins the indoor fan, spins the exhaust fan. Another is that many wheeled units create a vacuum. When the unit "exhausts" air to the outside, it removes air from your room, creating a vacuum. To re-establish equilibrium, air seeps into your room through cracks under doors, windows, ceiling light fixtures, etc. And on hot days, the air that "seeps" back in is hot. More expensive wheeled units have "dual" hoses to eliminate that vacuum effect by having one hose exhaust while the other is the intake.
To give you an idea on pricing, a 12,000 BTU energy star rated window unit is roughly $250, while a 12,000 BTU wheeled unit is over $500, sometimes $600, depending on noise level & features. Plus it'll perform at the level of roughly a 10,000 BTU window unit.
Is This Safe? Air Conditioning?
So I Have A Window Mounted Air Conditioner, And I Dont Want To Put It In My Window. Is It Safe That I Have It On The Floor In My Room, With All Of My Windows And My Door Shut? There Is No Ventilation, Just This Air Conditioner Running On My Bedroom Floor. Am I Ok?
Nope. You not going to cool very well and your electric bill will be extraordinary. Air conditioning is all about "removing the heat." You are not putting cold air into the room, you are removing the heat, that is if it is in the window where it belongs. If you noticed, the back of the air conditioner is blowing out hot air. That air needs to be discharged outside of the house. If you simply lay it on the floor and run it like that, you are totally defeating the purpose of air conditioning. You are NOT removing the heat. You are just recycling the room air through the window unit. As it sucks the room air through the front evaporator coil it is squeezing that heat out of the air and discharging it right back into the same room. So at the same time you are trying to remove the heat, you are pumping a "compressed" version of the heat which is higher than the existing room temperature right back into the room. This makes no sense at all. Your electric company will love you though, because this unit will probably never shut off. You may even start overheating the compressor and cause damage to the air conditioner. You may also start getting water from the air conditioner running all over your floor and if the air conditioner is sitting in that water, this is an electrocution hazard. If this is a new unit, you will void your warranty too. This is a totally dangerous idea that makes no sense at all.
How Often Should I Need To Change My Furnace/Central Air Filter?
My Furnace And Central Air Share The Same Ducts. How Often Should I Change The Filter? (I Use The 3M Filtrete Brand).
The Home Inspector Said Once Every 3 Months, The Guy Who Installed The Central Air Said Once A Month.
The installer was correct. You need to replace the filter every month.
Air conditioning systems are very low pressure systems. That is, the air flow through the various ductwork has a very low driving force. For comparison, when you talk about pressure in a balloon, you are measuring in pounds per square inch.
In a household airconditioning system, you are talking about ounce of water pressure per square inch. This is a very small pressure drop, so dust accumlation on your filter will quickly reduce the flowrate. Two things can happen when the air filter is plugged....
The airflow across the cooling coils will become very low and the air will get very cold, causing water to drop out into the drain system. This can cause your drain system to become overwhelmed and you will get leakage out of the attic AC unit and onto your cieling.
The other thing is, it can overload your AC system and cause premature failure.
Buy the cheap whispy air filters 3 per pack and replace them every month. I use my yahoo calender to send me an email reminder automatically every month.

Strange Illness At Work?
For Almost A Year Now, I Have Been Experiencing Odd Symptoms - Dizziness, Short Term Memory Loss, Confusion, Inability To Concentrate, Fatigue, Nausea, Headaches, Etc. I Went To Every Single Type Of Doctor You Could Imagine, But Every Test Turned Out Normal - I Just Decided To Live With It. As It Turned Out, I Went On Summer Break (I Am A Teacher) And Over The Course Of The First Few Weeks Off, All Symptoms Disappeared Completely. I Didn'T Question Why, I Was Just Glad To Be Feeling Better. As Soon As Summer Break Was Over, I Returned To Work Only To Experience The Symptoms Full Blast. It Was Then I Realized That My Environment At School Was Making Me Ill.
I Immediately Complained And After Bringing Up Osha, The Administration Arranged For A Health Inspector To Visit The Classroom. There Was An &Quot;Extremely High&Quot; Voc Reading In My Room, And The Health Inspector Said It Was Probably From Brand New Texts In My Closets. I Moved All Of The Texts Out Of The Room About Four Weeks Ago - Still I Have No Improvement. I Have No Idea What My Next Step Should Be... I Offered The Suggestion Of Toxic Mold But I Was Laughed At. Quite Frankly I'Ve Tried Everything. Written Requests To Change Classrooms Have Been &Quot;Overlooked.&Quot; If You Can Help Me Or Have Any Other Suggestions, Please Let Me Know.
Oh, And On A Side Note, Before The Health Inspector Came (But After I Started Complaining) The Maintenance Men At My Job Came In To Fix A Corroded Sewage Line That Is Directly Connected To My Air Conditioner. Apparently I Had Been Breathing In Hydrogen Sufide And Methane Gas For Quite Sometime. After The Hole Was Sealed, I Have To Admit I Felt A Slight Improvement. (Yep, I Could Go To Work And Not Feel Like I Was Being Strangled To Death.) Anyways, If You Or Someone You Know Has Experienced This Problem Please Help Me Out!
Having inspected classrooms, there are several things to look at. If you are in K-6, you may have carpeting in a play area. That can be a problem. If you have fish or animals, that can be a problem. Sofas and soft chairs can be problems. All of those should be removed. Carpet should at least be industrially cleaned.
In all schools, look at the outside. Has mulch been added next to a window or air intake. Did they conduct CO2 measurements in the room. High VOCs would not come from textbooks. New furniture, maybe, the cleaning supplies of the janitors, maybe. If textbooks, they should have been tested for comparison VOCs. Janitor supplies should have been reviewed. Many desk cleaning products contain VOCs and have been banned in many schools. You may volunteer to clean your own room and keep the janitors out for a period of time.
From your description, the inspector was not qualified or was restricted in what could be tested.
