I Came Home And Noticed That My Fan On My Outside Ac Unit Was Just Humming And The Fan Was No Longer Running I Got Hvac People In Who Stated I Needed To Replace The Motor. I Bought A New Motor And Capacitor. However, My New Fan Had An Extra Wire. Below Is What I Did:
Old Fan Brown, Black, Purple, Green
New Fan Brown, Black, Brown W/ White Stripe, Green, White
Old Fan Purple And Brown Wires Were Connected To The Three Pronged Capacitor
New Fan Green Wire Connected To The Old Green, Black Wire Connected To The Old Black, Brown Wire Connected To The Old Brown, Brown W/White
Stripe Connected To The Old Purple Wire, And White Wire Not Used.
I Took The Old Purple Wire(Now The Brown W/ White Stripe) And The Old Brown Wire Off The Three Pronged Capacitor And Connected Them To The New Two Pronged Capacitor. I Left The Other Connections On The Old Capacitor.
It Is Still Making The Same Humming Noise Before I Bought The New Motor. Is There Something Else Wrong Or Did I Mess Up In The Wiring? Any Help Would Be Appreciated. Thanks.
I'm with Solidaxl If the motor has a black and a white power lead you have a 120v motor. It's easy to check though. On modern motors that label on there tells you all you need to know. It'll show the brown and the brown with white stripe going to cap. The other two leads will be marked L1 and L2 or L1 and COM. If it's the latter you have a 120v motor.

On a typical thermostat, with the fan switch set to "auto" the fan will only come on when the system tells it to. If the selector switch (between Heat/Off/Cool) is set to off, then the fan will not come on.
Setting the selector switch to Off, while the fan switch is set to "auto" means you will get no air movement.
You can set the system to Off, and put the fan switch to "on", and the fan will circulate the air in the house. The fan is not controlled by the central system on this setting, so it will not turn itself off at any point - it is ignoring the temperature setting on the thermostat. This is just like taking a box fan, or oscillating fan, and turning them on. The difference is that you are circulating the air in all the rooms, not just the room a box fan is located, hehehe.
This is a good way to help cool just a bit, when you don't really need the full a/c system, just a little air movement.
Is it cheaper to run just the fan, and not the entire air conditioner ? Yes, because you are not using the air conditioner compressor pump, and fan in the cooling unit outside - you are just using the fan inside the box inside the house (the same fan that the furnace uses, by the way). At least it is cheaper for awhile - as I said, it will not shut itself off automatically - it keeps running. With the a/c system turned on, it matches the temp setting on the thermostat, and will turn itself off, until needed again later.
I would turn the system switch to Off, and just run the fan on relatively cool days, when I'd just like to have a little air movement, but don't really need the whole a/c. One advantage to this, too -- the air is filtered through the central air filter. For those with allergies, this is a better choice than opening up the windows, hehehe. It also helps minimize humidity increases inside the home, which could happen when opening windows.

If all thermometers and thermostats were standardized, then someone could just give you a number like 76 degrees. But, since they are not standard- then its a "trial and error" situation.
A fair place to start is 76. If you are a busy person-you may need to go down to maybe 72, or lower. If you are a couch potato, then maybe go up to 80.
Fans help circulate the air.
Just set it and see what happens. If it seems warm, drop it a couple degrees. If thats too cool- raise it 1 degree.
Give it time between adjustments.
Its rare that a thermostat will keep the temp exactly where its set to. There may be a 2-3 degree range of where it starts and cuts off.
I set mine on 77. It runs 78-79.
Should I Get New Air Conditioning?
High, I'M The Lead Director Of A Small Library In New York, This Library Has 5 Separate Systems For Zoning Purposes, Basically One System On Each Floor So Each Floor Isnt Too Hot Or Too Cold So Theres Not Hot Or Cold Spots, Recently The Air Conditioning On The Top Floors Hasn'T Been Getting The Temperature Down Lately, I Have All Of The Systems Set On 70 Degrees Which Is A Comfortable Temperature For Everyone, But On The Top Floors It Will Stay On 76 Until The Sun Sets And Theres No Big Windows Really That Let Alot Of Sun In, During Last Weeks Heat Wave The Temps Reached 83 Up There And I Needed To Get A Fan To Help The Librarians That Work Up There To Stay Cool, But Its Not Till Overnight When No One Including Myself Is There When It Reaches 70 (I Leave All The Systems On 24/7), But The Thing Is In The Winter The Top Floors Heat Fine And Have No Problem Reaching 68 Degrees (Which Is What I Set It To In The Winter On All The Systems), But I'M Not Sure If Its Worth Really Replacing The Upstairs Systems Since They Work Well In The Winter, All Of The Systems Are Forced Air Gas Furnances, I Maintain All Of Them Well, I Replace The Air Filters When They Get Dirty, When I Became Head Dicector In 2008 The Upstairs System Worked Fine And Always Reached 70, All Of The Systems Are From The Late 80S Or Early 90S Not Really Sure The Exact Date, They Are Used Alot Since I Like The Keep The Library Comfortable All Year Round, But In The Spring I Do Open The Windows When The Air Conditioner Is Not Needed So Its Not Like I Have Them Running When There Not Needed, So Should A Wait Till The A/C Completly Breaks Up There Or Get A New System Now, Only About 1 And A Half More Months Of Hot Weather When It Will Be Needed So I'M Not Sure What To Do

Then they can evaluate whats going on. Then if the AC systems are needing replacement then that would be a good time to band aid whats needed to get you though the rest of the summer. And lay out your budget for next year to replace the systems. If they are from the early 90's your pushing almost 20 year old equipment. So, in my view it would probably be time to replace the systems. The serial number if still readable will tell the HVAC guy when the date of MFG was. Typically that information is on the unit with MFG date code. However after 20 years the tags maybe unreadable. I would also, suggest running the blower 24.7 on all the units. Monthly pleated filter changes should be done. If you have been using mesh filters, expect the evaporator coils to be very dirty, which will cause cooling performance.

R134A is the best fit at this time.
If changing to R134A from older refrigerants, the oil in the compressor system has to be changed, the new gas and the old oils are incompatible. This will wreck the compressor.
