I have some (probably) bad news. My wife also has a 2005 Toyota Matrix and in fact I just got off the phone with the tech at the Toyota dealership. We've complained about the A/C being "cool" but NEVER cold from day one (we bought the car brand new, it NEVER has been cold). Each summer we go back to the dealership, the plug in the hoses/gauges, etc, and say "everything looks fine"... but still, when you drive it on a hot day, the air coming out of the vents is never, ever cold. Cool, yes. Cold, no.
The shop foreman at the local Toyota place here said he drove 2 other 2005 and 2006 Matrixes and they were exactly the same and were "working as designed." That's right. It's a bad design. Imagine that, Toyota, a Japanese company, made a badly designed product! I'm sorry to say, that's the exact problem.
Ironically, the "twin" of the Matrix -- the Pontiac Vibe (built on the same assembly line, identicle cars mechanically -- uses a GM A/C compressor and it gets ICE COLD! I know this, because we had one as a rental car while the Matrix was in for body repairs last year (fender bender).
So, basically, the problem is... it's a Toyota. They have mediocre air conditioning systems. GM cars have frigid, ice-cold air conditioning systems (such as the ICE COLD a/c in my 2004 Chevrolet Colorado). Toyota? No.
I was recommended by the dealer shop foreman to call the Toyota customer service number listed in the owner's manual and complain about this problem and ask them to resolve it. If nobody ever calls to complain that it is a problem, it will never be fixed. End of story. Call and complain to Toyota! I'm calling today!
If Toyota can't resolve this by redesigning something and sending a new part to be installed, I will NOT be buying a Toyota next time. The perceived "reliability" of Toyota as compared to reality is vastly different. Ask the thousands of Toyota owners with sludge-filled engines that had to be rebuilt under recall or those with grossly defective drum brakes on Toyota Sienna vans, etc. All manufacturers have their issues, and apparently Toyota's issue is they don't know how to make an air conditioning system. On the other hand, this is an area where GM and Ford do very well. In Texas, I'm more concerned about a COLD A/C than I am about some bogus Consumer Reports biased magazine report.
