Frequently Asked Questions:
How Can Heat Be Converted To Electricity?
Just Curious. Electricity Easily Can Create Heat, But How Can This Process Be Reversed To Create Electricity?
It is a thermodynamic challenge to convert heat to electricity. You cannot convert all of it, as an upper limit of efficiency exists based on the temperature of the source heat, and the temperature at the rejection of the waste heat (do a search on Carnot engines to understand this better).
You convert heat in to work by sending a working fluid, such as steam or air, through pressure transformations (turbine expansions, compressions, pumping) capturing a net work output, and thermal processes (boiling, condensing, combustion) which provide the heat input and allow for the heat rejection.
Various arrangements of these fluid processes exist. Selections we commonly use are named the following:
1. Rankine cycle: steam power plants, either with fossil fuels or nuclear fuel as the source of heat
2. Brayton cycle: gas turbine power plants and aircraft jet engines
3. Otto cycle: used in the internal combustion engine with spark iginition, as observed on a typical automobile. You may also find these in gasoline powered generators.
4. Diesel cycle: used with an internal combustion engine, which uses compression igintion. As the name implies, diesel truck engines use this cycle. The difference from the Otto cycle is the boundary condition during the combustion process.
What ever the cycle choice the net work output is received as torque on drive shaft, outputting the energy to an electric generator, which uses oscillating magnetic fields in wire coils to induce an electric voltage.

Home Air Conditioner. A Coil Froze Up?
Came Home And Seen My A Coil Froze Up. Defrosted It But I Think Its Coming Back. I Cleaned And Replaced All Filters. What Could This Be
The most common reason air conditioning coils freeze is that, during the colder months of the year, the ambient temperature drops below the freezing point of water (32 degrees Fahrenheit). There are, however, other circumstances where coils can freeze at higher temperatures.
Freezing can be prevented by draining the coils of water and circulating antifreeze through them temporarily, leaving antifreeze in them for the winter or simply circulating the water. However, most chilled water coils feature some kind of counterflow measure; cold air comes into contact with the coldest water first, encouraging rather than discouraging freezing.
If air conditioning coils freeze during the summer, the problem is usually inadequate airflow across the coils or a problem with the refrigeration system. The frozen coils can be rectified by switching the air conditioning system into heating mode for a time, but the underlying problem must also be investigated.
An accumulation of grime in the air handler fan (blower) or filters can cause poor airflow and lead to freezing. The blower should be cleaned and the filters replaced once the coil has defrosted and before operating the system in cooling mode again.
Air Conditioning Unit Cost?
My Fiancee And I Bought A Home Last Summer, We Are In The Sacramento Area, Which Can Reach 110 Or So Degrees On The Hottest Days! Our Ac/Furnace Unit Is (I Am Assuming The Age Of The House ), Approx 19 Years Old, And It Really Has Trouble Cooling The House. It Is A 2 Story Home, And The Summers Upstairs Are Almost Unbearable.
We Have Had The Salesman Come To Talk To Us About New Unit Price, Install And That Sort Of Thing, And All Of The Efficiency Tax Writeoffs And Credits, And Smud Discounts, But It Still Seems Ridiculously Expensive. Quotes From 3 Different Companies Were In The Vicinity Of 11-13K! And It Seems Lame To Me To Finance An Ac Unit For A 10 Year Period.
I Guess I Am Throwing This Out There To See If This Cost Is Typical, Or If There Is Any Hope To Find Something More Reasonable. We Are Currently Saving For A Wedding, So I Am Beginning To Think We Will Have To Sweat Out Another Summer :(. If Anyone Has Similar Stories, Or Suggestions On How To Maybe Find Cheaper Units (In The Sacramento Area Would Be The Best), It Would Be Greatly Appreciated.
you can buy a new central air conditioner unit for a couple thousand dollars....where those guys are trying to get you is on high end heat pumps and super high efficiency units
they also have to pay for all of their equipment and labor....keep in mind those guys are really only super busy in the hotter months.....it sounds like a rip off, but the cost of running a business like that and still make a profit is outrageous
i suggest you find a local handyman to help.....also make sure the unit you have is really that bad....just because it is old doesn't mean it's not capable of cooling the home..
clean it up really good....clean the outside unit....change filters.....buy some long vacuum hose and clean out your ducts.....clean the indoor fan.....
make sure you are getting the most of the unit you have
here is an example of how cheap you can get a 3 ton unit
also look in to window units
Here is one more option that is becoming more and more popular...it's a good product
Who Makes The Best Air Conditioning Units?
Day & Night
Myself, I prefer trane over everything else, I have worked in the field, and as a technician you see flaws or things you dont like. York, I cant say too much bad about york, they used to have compressor bearing issues but I am sure that has been corrected by now, and now scroll compressors are mostly used so that isnt too much of a concern anymore, now day and night, I cant judge this because I havent seen too many in my area, sounds kinda cheap. I dont know. Payne, this is just builder grade equipment, nothing extravagant and will get you buy, home warranty companies will normaly have a payne air conditioner installed in the event of the original needing replaced cause they are cheap. Carrier, the only problem I have with carrier is some of their control systems, you get an infiniti system try to find parts for that on a 100 degree day at 8 pm, not going to happen, carrier has a hard time leaving well enough alone, they are always trying to up the ante with some kind of crap you dont need. Trane, been running strong for years and their compressors are proven, and always have been, with the exception of a couple lemons here and there, they make good stuff and always have, And thats another thing I think of when I look at these brands, some of the crap they sold to the public that was just junk 15 years ago, seen it all..anyways..Rheem, another company that I think makes good equipment, they keep their units good and simple and they are very realiable, easy to service, and just well put together, If I were going to put a new system in my house, Trane or Rheem, I just dont think you can go wrong with either of them
