Frequently Asked Questions
Central Air Alternatives?
I Have A Home That Has Radiant Heat And No Duct Work. I Know My Two Choices Are Mini-Duct High Velocity Ac Or Ductless Mini-Split Ac. I Am Looking To Cool My Home Like A Convention Central Ac Would. Which System Would Be Better For My Situation?
A lot of that depends on the size of your home and accessibility for the high velocity system. There are some mini-split systems that can divide the air between two fan coil units, which would work fine if you only needed to cool 1 or 2 rooms. That might work for your main living area, if you want to install window units in the bedrooms or additional mini-splits. If you want to cool multiple rooms with one unit and there is space available to fit the high velocity duct in then I would recommend that option for overall comfort and efficiency.
Since you're leaning toward the mini-duct, I will at least say that I haven't seen a real life installation as yet, but I have seen it at a few trade shows and have read quite a bit about it in the trade magazines. Although the concept is relatively new still, I was pretty impressed with the demonstration. It seems to be a good way to go when space for duct work is limited and has been a good alternative in older homes that were never designed for air conditioning. If you can find a contractor who can show you an actual installation that he's done, then it might be worth your time to check it for yourself. Good luck.
What Is A Solid State Heater Cooler ? Is It Use In Portable Coolers /Warmers And Air Condition Systems?
Is Solid State Cooler Heater The Same Device As Peltier? Which Is Use For Temperature Change In Potrable Warmers/Coolers? Can This Technology Be Employed In A Portable Air Condition Unit? If So How Does It Work? The Application And Use For This Solid State Device.
Is it a pair of thermocouples run in reverse.
What is a thermocouple: if you join two dis-similar metals, you get a small voltage. If you get one T/C hot and keep another one cool and connect one lead of each, you will have a simple. solid state, low-efficiency electrical generator when you put an electrical load between the two remaining wires. Putting a bunch in series and in parallel lets you increase the available voltage and amperage.
Such a "thermocouple pile" is used one the Voyager spacecraft. One pile is heated by a nuclear reaction. The cold junction is hanging out in space, radiating heat away. Very simple and very reliable.
But only about 10-15% efficient.
Doing the reverse - apply a voltage to two different thermocouple piles - causes one to get hot and the other to get cold.
Those plug-in solid-state ice-chest/warmers use that effect. They also have a fan to blow heat away from the hot junction. You need an electrical source like line voltage or a cigarette lighter (not batteries!) because it sucks a lot of power for not much effect. It is better at keeping something hot or cold than it is at GETTING something cold. i.e. it would take a LONG time to make ice cubes.
It wouldn't make a very good air conditioner because the efficiency is so bad. Freon or some other compressible gas in a refridgeration cycle is MUCH more efficient and that pulls a few horsepower. To cool a car with a peltier-effect T/Cs would suck 100 hp or more. What it can do is cool a little volume, like a few beer cans.
Do You Agree With Feminists Who Claim Air Conditioning Is Sexist Against Women?
No I do not agree with the claim that air conditioning is sexist. The original study dating back to the 1970s was conducted over 8 major cities by the DTAL and included over 4000 people.
The feminist study was done in one office with 16 people.
Do I really need to say any more?
Lets not forget also that men have much stricter dress standards than women in offices. Most men are confined to long trousers and shirts at a minimum whereas women can wear skirts, semi-tshirts, trousers, jumpers or pretty much anything except beach clothes. Seems amazing that a woman couldn't find suitable clothing to be comfortable in most temperatures.
If You Exercise With The Air-Conditioning On,Will You Sweat The Same Amount As Without It On?
During Exercising I Sometimes Do Not Turn On The Air-Conditioning And I Sweat A Lot Which Makes Me Think That It Is Good For My Body.
However When I Do Exercise With The Air-Conditioning, Is That Not As Good Since I Am Not (Or Am I ) Sweating Off The Same Amount Of Toxins To Cleanse My Body?
with the air conditioning on it will take longer for your body to heat up but not by to much and when your done you will stop sweating sooner so you are sweating less but as long as you get a good sweat you have nothing to worry about you still sweat out the toxins and either way you burn the same amount of calories from the workout
Can You Sue Your Employer For Not Fixing The Air Conditioning?
I Have A Friend Who'S Boss Refuses To Fix The Air Conditioning At Her Place Of Employment. Could She Sue Him For Anything ?
I'm not sure about the grounds for a lawsuit--an attorney may take the suit even if it is not viable.
I do know you can file a complaint with OSHA. There is no set temperature, but it does provide guidelines for employee safety based on the workload and temperature. Also, requirements such as providing adequate rest time and cold drinks based on the temperatures and type of work being done apply (The link below has more specific information on the calculations and guidelines).
To give you an idea of what the end result of the calculations would be, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (1992) states that workers should not be permitted to work when their deep body temperature exceeds 100.4°F. If your friend is not experiencing this type of core body temperature, it would probably fall under an issue of comfort and not a safety concern.
