Frequently Asked Questions:

Air Conditioning Fan - 'On' Or 'Auto'?
Someone Told Me I Will Save Energy By Leaving The A/C Fan To On All The Time Vs. Using Auto (Where The Fan Comes On As Needed). Is This Correct?

Absolutely incorrect. I work for a company that installs A/C and Heat Pump systems, and we tell every customer the same thing, put it on auto and leave it there. The only reason you would want it on is if you would want the A/C turned off, and just have the fan run to circulate air, which will not save much energy since the fan motor will be running, and it won't cool your house at all. Shut the A/C down, leave the fan on auto, and open some windows if you want to save energy.

Does Humidity Rise To 2Nd Floor Of A House. (Is My Second Floor More Humid Becuase Humidity Rises?)?

You are correct. The warm air does rise to the second floor and caries humidity with it. However I believe you did not ask a question for the sake of getting an answer you already know.

I assume you have a problem with a central air-conditioning. If your second floor is significantly warmer there are a few thing you can do to improve the work of your air-conditioner.
1.Open all register on the second floor
2.Close doors leading to the second floor. If the architecture does not allow that close the doors to the rooms on the second floor and use a ceiling fan(s) do drive the humid air down.
3.Slightly close register downstairs to allow more air to go to the second floor.
4.Install (if you do not have already) an attic fan to get rid of heat in your attic.
5.Check insulation between the second floor the attic space.
6.If all fails check your AC system.

Let me know if it helps.
Good luck.

Method For Calculating Air Conditiong, Heating, Electricty Costs?
Hi, I'M Working On A School Project And I Need To Get A Rough Estimate Of Air Conditioning, Heating, And Electricity Costs. I'M Wondering, Are There Any Formulas Or Methods To Figure These Things Out? Thanks For Any Help.

You should do internet searches to get heating and air conditioning requirements. I would start with Wikipedia entries, but look around. Most school projects won't accept Wiki as a source, but its usually a very helpful starting place.

Usually done by estimating. 1. You look at map for degree-days for temperature at your building location. Then, charts to determine heating/AC load, typically by square foot and building type. Less power for well insulated and multi-floor building, and for basements.
2. Determine square footage of your building.
3. Multiply values together.

You can get electricity costs over the internet, something like $0.08 to $0.12 per kW-hr. A kW-hr is 1000 watts for 1 hour. For comparison, a 1 HP motor theoretically uses 0.746 kW-hr to run 1 hr, but more likely, uses 0.8 to 0.9.

ASHRAE has much related literature on heating and air conditioning - you can try that in your searches. Also, HVAC (heating, ventilating, air conditioning) is a common related acronym.

After you've searched and get stuck, post back here, and we would be glad to lend a hand. This is a good opportunity to improve your internet search skills.

What Does Mold And Mildew Smell Like?
In My Bedroom Their Is A Musty Smell That Almost Smells Like Cedar. I Am Pregnant Almost Due And Am Worrying If It Is A Serious Health Danger To My Baby Or A Health Danger At All. Please Let Me Know! I Am Very Concerned!

Yeah, that's most likely mold or mildew. Has there been any known water damage? Flooding, maybe a large spill on carpet, or a leaking roof or water pipe? If so, I would guess that there is some mold or mildew. The only way you can know for sure is to contact a professional who can test for mold in the air Or buy a home testing kit.

Mold and mildew are not good for anyones health. It can affect the lungs, and cause asthma and other chronic diseases. I would strongly suggest getting the house checked out to make sure that there is or isn't mold. If you just noticed the smell, and you are due in a month to a couple of weeks, I'm sure you will deliver a perfectly normal baby. However long term expose may be bad.

A lot of evidence states that the development of allergies and asthma actually begins in the womb. This is especially the case with asthma. Researchers are finding out that asthma may not be genetic at all. It is caused by triggers in the environment. Studies show that asthma sufferers develop the condition at some point in their lives due to exposure to toxins, such as mold. It may begin in the uterus.

Some studies have suggested that there may be a link between Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and exposure to black mold in the womb. There are also a variety of chronic fatigue illnesses that children who have been exposed to mold may suffer. Still, the studies have not been done to show whether this is fully the case or not.

What You Can Do

If you have just found that you are pregnant, or if you are just starting to worry about mold, you should get your home or workplace tested for mold. You can get a home testing kit from the hardware store. It is probably a good idea to start off your pregnancy in a mold-free environment. Nobody knows the exact relation between mold and birth defects, allergies and asthma, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

For your baby's health, it is also important to keep your house mold-free after birth. There are no studies showing that mold has an effect on breast feeding, but mold is definitely unhealthy for your baby's general health.

One more thing to think about is your workplace. Many women work in the early or middle stages of pregnancy and it is often more difficult to find mold in a building where you work than in your home. Ask your boss about mold inspections, especially if you work in an old building. If you can see or smell mold in your workplace, you are definitely in danger.

If your boss or supervisor will not do anything about the mold problem, you can seek a legal solution. There are laws to protect you and your unborn baby's health.

I hope you deliver a perfectly normal healthy baby, and that your house is not infected with mold. I also hope this helped. Essie

Air Conditioning For 1980 Mercedes 300Cd Diesel?
I Have A 1980 Mercedes 300Cd Diesel With Air Conditioning That Doesn'T Work, No Air Coming Out If The Ducts Whatsoever, But When I Use The Heater, Hot Air Does Come Out. I Would Like To Know What Can The Problem Be, If Any Good Sites To Show How To Fix This Please Leave Them Because I Would Like To Do It Myself For A Learning Experience, Also I Am 16 So I Dont Really Have The Money To Go Buy A New Compressor If I Need To, So Any Sites To Help Me, Or Any Personal Advice Is Welcomed, Many Thanks =)

The HVAC (Heat, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system is one of the weak points - and one of the most common failures - in such older models. In all likelihood, it will be prohibitively expensive and not worthwhile to repair, even in the unlikely event that it only needs a "new compressor", which would be minimum $400 just for the part - and does not include all the extensive labor required for installation, additional parts needed, etc. Even if it just needs a refrigerant charge (not likely from the description of the problem), cars that old use R-12 Freon, which is no longer sold or manufactured. Those antique Mercedes use an extremely complicated system of analog circuit boards, mechanical controls, and vacuum lines, and repairs are far beyond the scope of an inexperienced home mechanic. I hate to break it to you, but it may be near impossible to fix. Anything's possible with enough money though, and you might find old stock R-12 on eBay for $200 a pound (your car takes ~4 pounds of it), or you could have it converted to R134a for a grand or so. *Maybe* it's just a bad relay or blown fuse, but if the A/C hasn't worked in a year or more, the compressor is likely seized anyway.

That said, an excellent website for general Mercedes-Benz repair and maintenance tips is Benzworld.org (free registration required for full access). Another great one is www.mercedessource.com. Kent Bergsma, the owner, hosts and narrates a series of interesting and practical "fix-it" videos on the MercedesSource YouTube channel. The best source for Mercedes parts is AutoHausAZ.com, a German car parts specialist - they're FAR less expensive for the same parts than anywhere else.
