Nevertheless, all these methods fall brief of thorough openness. The BBB in fact works for the companies it represents as they are only rated if the business in question pays them a recurring charge. Online evaluation sites seldom display all the reviews got, and post reviews from sources that are not always credible. This supplies a platform for business to post their own reviews and individuals to quickly post evaluations without the company in concern's capability to expertly fix the issue. Moreover, no company would give out a negative reference; only those that are very positive. None of these are perfect dynamics for customers looking for totally unbiased evaluations and referrals. It is recommended to utilize these approaches as an educated customer and consider the information source for exactly what it is worth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How Much Would It Cost To Install Air-Conditioning In A Classic Volkswagen Beetle ('60'S Or '70S)?
I'Ve Been Looking At These Cars Lately, And Would Love To Own One In The Near Future For My First Car. I Just Noticed There'S No Ac! I Live Down South So I'D Die Without It.

This company makes an aftermarket AC system for air cooled VWs. Not cheap, but I've read it works well.

Some VWs actually had factory air, though I'd say any surviving units are going to be uber rare. I had a '73 with AC. All that extra plumbing and compressor sure made it crowded in that engine bay.

Someone posted about a cooler that mounts to the window. Those are swamp coolers and function by air blowing over water in the tank. They work, but won't work at all if you're in a high humidity region... like the south.

How Do I Know If My Window Air Conditioner Have To Add Water?
Hi Im Renting This Small House And Have A Window Air Conditioner But They Don'T Know If A Have To Add Water Because Is Not Cooling And I Don'T Know How Or Were To Put It If A Need It Can Anyone Know Thanks

It doesn't use water, it uses some form of compressed gas, usually Freon of some form.

If it is not cooling you can either take it to a place and have them look at repairing it, but with the smaller Air Conditioners, it's usually cheaper to replace them with a newer one.

More energy efficient too.

@Polar Bear - Yes I know many AC units get tossed out when they only need something minor. Hence the reason I suggested that it be taken into be serviced to see if it can be repaired within value. However, you have to weigh value over the lifetime of the unit.

I had a window unit that I took in to have serviced. The guy told me that it could be repaired, that the cost would be "X" amount and it could be done within an afternoon. But he then told me that it would be cheaper in the long run to get a new unit for the money I'd spend.

Thinking that I was getting conned into buying a new unit from him, I decided to take the unit back and do a little research. I went shopping. Sure enough, the newer units were only $30 more than the cost to repair the one that I had. So I could toss my money on a 20 year old window unit and get it running for a little while longer, or I could invest an additional $30 and get something that was brand new and not likely to break down for quite a long while.

But that's not all. I learned about something called the "Energy Star" Compliance. Not only was I investing the additional $30 and getting something that I would not have to worry about for the next several seasons, I was getting something that was more energy efficient and could actually save me money in the long run. There was an online chart of what various models used in the way of electricity. Mine was not in the list by name, but it gave the ratings of the units and the ages. Finding one that matched mine, I found out that the mid-80's window unit I was running was using more kilowatt hours than the new one. By a not inconsiderable amount either. At 20 cents per kilowatt hour, I was saving $15 per month. Two months of use and I made up for the additional $30 over the cost of servicing. Two seasons (6 months) and I had paid for the cost of the unit with the savings in my electric bill.

So even though a servicing on my old unit would have rescued it from the recycling center and allowed it to continue, I had gotten a cheaper to run unit, I got something with a 5 year warranty, something that was going to last longer than the old one before needing its first repair, was lighter, and was quieter than the old one.

So what advantage would there be in keeping the 20 year old AC?

@Polar Bear Additional - First of all, being certified in AC repair doesn't make you a god among men. It only makes you a skilled member of the work force who specializes in something that many other people are not.

Secondly, even if I were certified in AC repair and could fix it for free, it doesn't change the fact that the unit was an older model that was not as energy efficient as the newer models. Even with that ability, *no one* can make it run more efficiently short of replacing the internal mechanisms which means you are either buying new components or cannibalizing the components of a newer, more energy efficient unit.

Which if one HAD a newer, more energy efficient unit, one would have to be completely daft to try and fix the older unit when it would make more sense to repair the newer one.

In either case, even if I had your services at your disposal of if I had the talent to do the work myself, with the energy savings from the 20-year old unit and the new unit it was still the wiser course of action to let the old one go to the recycling center and get the new one. A $100 window unit made today saves me $15 per month on my electric bill. That means that in two seasons (4 months this year and two months and a bit next year) I've paid for the new unit in the energy savings.

There are times when you have to take an honest assessment of the equipment and do a const analysis. Do I spend $60 dollars and keep an older AC in operation (or in your case do you invest the time and effort) and keep paying a higher energy bill, or do you replace it and save money over the life if the new unit?

Considering that the new unit has a 5 year warranty, that's a savings of $300 (4 month season over 5 years). If it died after that it owes me no money. If it makes it another 20 years and dies...well you do the math.

If the CD isn't booting, it's most likely a memory problem or over-heating.

Open up your case, take a look at the condition of the heatsink under the CPU fan. Make sure it's not covered with dust/hair etc. Turn the PC on for a few seconds with the case off, make sure the CPU fan runs, turn it back off. If there was a lot of dust buildup, use some canned air, or blow really hard through a straw to clean the dust (payin attention to the area under the fan, you'll have to blow through the blades of the fan..) If you had to clean a lot of dust, then try booting it again now, if there wasn't a lot of builtup, or if it still doesn't boot, continue below.

Unplug the machine. You will hopefully see 2 or more memory sticks. Try removing 1 stick and boot, if it still does it, but that stick back in, remove another, try booting... If you have 3 or 4 memory sticks, repeat 1 or 2 more times, obviously.

Keep in mind, the memory sticks only fit in 1 way (the notch in the stick is "off centered")

To remove the memory stick, press the little "levers" down toward the motherboard at both ends of the memory stick you are remvoing, it will pop up, then you can grab it and pull it up.

Take static precautions when handling the memory... Touch the case before you touch the memory, and don't walk across a carpeted room with it and you will be fine... they are not THAT delicate, but you don't want to risk it either...

to re-insert, align with the slot, press each end in (It will require pretty firm pressure, if it's alligned in the end slots, just keep pressing quite firmly until both ends pop into place, the little levers at the ends will pop back up in place when you have the memory seated.)
