I'd recommend buying a few of those "power strips" with fat cords. The good ones have overload breakers, and the heavier wires carry more amperage without getting hot. Also they have switches, so you can power them down for safety when not in use. How dangerous are extension cords? They weren't allowed in any housing the Army ever provided for me 40 years ago. Many house fires involve them. I'd put fresh batteries in the smoke detectors.
